An Elk Dropped In

In the story Es ist ein Elch entsprungen, with a title that is a humorous variation on the name of a famous German Christmas song, a boy acquires just such a Christmas friend in a most remarkable way. In Andreas Steinhöfel's fantastic story, Mr. Moose has an accident during a training flight with Santa Claus's sleigh. Plummeting to earth, Mr. Moose crashes through a roof, demolishing the living room table in a house of a family that, following the parents’ divorce, is no longer complete. Bertil, who actually stopped believing in the Weihnachtsmann [Santa Claus] a long time ago, comes to confide in the moose all of his great worries and desires. And he finds in Mr. Moose a friend who can convey his greatest wish or the reconciliation of his parents to the appropriate authority.
